10 Steps for Compassionate Caregiving
- Approach the person from the front, move to the side, bend at head-to-head level, letting them know you are coming by making eye contact.
- Help the person with relaxation strategies to minimize fear, anxiety and stress.
- Attempt to maintain a consistent routine.
- Provide a safe and calm environment.
- Consider the person's discomfort due to pain, hunger, thirst, incontinence, fatigue.
- Be patient and try to avoid confusion.
- Consider how the lack of stimulation and boredom may be affecting this person.
- Be aware how medications may affect behavior such as insomnia or irritability.
- Keep promises. If you forget something, admit it.
- Be gracious when you leave them.

All 10 tips show that the caregiver should remember the carereceiver is a human being.
