50th Anniversary of the fall of Long Tieng, Laos (May 2025)

The 50th anniversary of the fall of Long Tieng, Laos, in May 2025, marks a significant moment in the history of the Hmong and Lao communities. Long Tieng served as the clandestine headquarters for the CIA-backed Hmong forces during the “Secret War” in Laos, which paralleled the Vietnam War.

On May 14, 1975, the base fell to communist forces, leading to the evacuation of thousands of Hmong fighters and their families to Thailand and eventually to the United States.

In recognition of this pivotal event, various commemorations have been organized in 2025:

  • Hmong-Lao Veterans Day in Wisconsin: Governor Tony Evers proclaimed May 14 as Hmong-Lao Veterans Day, ordering flags to be flown at half-staff across the state. This observance honors the sacrifices of Hmong-Lao soldiers who fought alongside U.S. forces during the Vietnam War and acknowledges the resilience of Southeast Asian American communities.

  • Hmong American Day in California: On May 17, Elk Grove, California, hosted the 50th Year Anniversary Hmong American Day, celebrating the contributions and heritage of the Hmong community in the United States.

These events serve as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Hmong and Lao people’s experiences during and after the Secret War, highlighting their contributions and the challenges they faced during resettlement.
